DARK VOID (2010)

DARK VOID (2010)
Genre: Action

Release Date: January 19, 2010
Also on: X360, PS3
ESRB: T

Publisher: Capcom
Developer: Airtight Games

SUMMARY:

Dark Void delivers a ground breaking combination of fast paced vertical combat mixed with mid-air and on-foot action.

Something is consuming our universe, a vast and ancient force almost beyond our comprehension. Millions of years ago, the minions of that power found their way to the 3rd planet of an unremarkable yellow star. Ours. The race they created came to call their masters "The Watchers." For millennia we knew them as gods and served their dark purposes, but a few humans developed extraordinary powers. They were known as the Adepts and they rose up, banishing The Watchers into a parallel universe, where they've manipulated and schemed from afar. Until now.

REVIEW:

I've tried several times to write this introduction, and I just can't seem to come up with anything I like. You can blame writer's block, but the truth is that I always try to start an article with what I find most interesting about a subject, and nothing about Dark Void is interesting. Nothing in Airtight Games and Capcom's latest is a complete failure, and in the same vein, nothing is a success. There were plenty of times that I was screaming at the game because the main character wasn't taking cover and there were others where I was smiling while punching the heads off robots, but all of these moments drifted into the ether after the experience was done.

Dark Void is one of those games you'll play, beat, and forget ever existed. There's nothing noteworthy here. I'd love to boil down the tale of Dark Void to a sentence or two like I do in most reviews, but presentation is one of this game's most obvious flaws. You're Will, a guy who was a pilot in the service but got "dishonorably discharged" for something, and you're now running courier missions. A gal named Ava shows up for one of these missions, and it turns out you have a history with her. You take off, go down inside the Bermuda Triangle, and are suddenly in another dimension filled with tribal people and alien slug creatures in robotic suits... well, some are slugs in suits, others are robots who are just robots and then there are these aliens with lisps that are hard to understand. Here, a guy who looks like Walt Disney gives you a jetpack but never introduces himself or explains his actions. Things only get weirder and more convoluted from there, and unless you're willing to read the instruction manual and do all the legwork, the story will never come together. Dark Void's hook is that it gives you the chance to be the Rocketeer. You'll get the jetpack early on and be able to leap into the sky to hover over the bad guys or fly around at breakneck speeds. When you're hovering you'll have access to the same two weapons you're allowed to carry when you're on foot, and when you're flying you'll shoot with the unlimited machine guns on your pack. Neither mode is all that spectacular.

When you're flying you're going to be up against ships that are only programmed to get behind you. You'll start to get shot at from behind, do a 360-loop to get behind that ship, and try to get a few hits in before it falls behind you again. When you're close to a ship you can perform a "skyjacking" and hop onto the aircraft to try and bust in, but the process of doing this is a drawn out, repetitive affair. By the end of the game, I had gotten so sick of taking ships down this way (and getting cheaply killed while doing it) that I found the equally repetitive mission of trying to dogfight them to the ground to be the better alternative because it seemed faster. Although you can fight while hovering, the ability is just kind of there as a transition between the ground and the sky and vice versa. When you're down on the ground and obeying the laws of gravity, you'll find that Dark Void is your typical, generic third-person shooter. You take cover on objects, blind fire, hurl grenades, and so on. These robots you're up against take a ton of shots to take down in the early goings of the game, but that really shouldn't matter because you can one-hit kill most of the jerks with your melee attack. Of course, in true Dark Void fashion, there are only a few melee animations, the one where you shoot the robot in the back rarely lines up to look correct, and most of the enemies will stand there while you swing at them. Even if you're shooting them from a distance, many of your enemies will just sit there and take the beating until they're dead. Combat's just there -- it's not exciting or fulfilling.

Capcom tries to put a new twist on the action with "vertical combat," but this is both absurd and the part where most people start getting motion sick. Here, our hero will hover up to a hanging platform ledge, grab on, and somehow make his body parallel to the ledge. Imagine standing flat against a wall -- that's how he's hanging from the underside of these overhangs. It's physically impossible. Anyway, while hanging from this perspective, you're looking up at the action and popping out to shoot baddies and advancing to the next platform with a button tap. This whole shimmying, jetting, rotating, and shooting part gave me a headache. I was able to adjust to it, but I know some IGN editors have not. These "eh" moments of dogfighting, melee attacking people, and vertical combat might not be so grating if Dark Void didn't beat the concepts into the ground. This three-episode game isn't that long (two solid play sessions should polish it off), and you will do these same things over and over again. By the time I reached minute 30 of escorting a massive slow-moving ark down a tight corridor -- I was blasting UFO after UFO from the ark's turrets, dogfighting anti-aircraft guns, and a whole bunch of other annoying stuff -- I was on the verge of tears. When I was using vertical combat to make my way down a hangar and escape the alien base, I was praying for the level to end. These are not the feelings one has when playing a good videogame.

Beyond all the presentation and gameplay fumbles there are actually a few "eww" moments on the technical side. Lip syncing is off, shadows look bad, cutscenes don't run very well, and bland environments are all over the place. Although it's nice to have Nolan North on board for the voice of Will, North sounds exactly like he does as the lead in the Uncharted franchise and the fact that Will looks just like Nathan Drake does little to distract from the fact that you should be playing that game instead of this one. Do these issues sink the game? No, before this stuff popped up I knew it was a lackluster experience, so this was just par for the course -- another cog in the machine of "meh" that is Dark Void.

Deck 13

Release Date: TBA 2010

Summary:

In the era of Venetica, Death walks among the living as a flesh & blood being, carrying out the deeds of an ancient council known by a few as Corpus. Each generation of the Corpus is set with the task of selecting the next predecessor of the bringer of death. Unfortunately, the most recent council had unwittingly selected a crafty necromancer who is determined on bringing death and destruction to the world.
This conniving imposter has managed to transform into an undead fiend, which no mortal man can kill. This power-crazed necromancer is hell-bent on destroying the reinstated Death and the council of Corpus. Only one person stands in his way, Scarlett, the daughter of Death.
Up to now she has known nothing of her origins, her powers and the capabilities that she possesses – now she is challenged to learn how to develop and use her powers to save her father and curse the necromancer and his henchmen to the eternal hereafter.

Review: (BY IGN)

Earlier this year, Erik got a first look at Venetica, the upcoming action game from Deck 13 and DTP. While he got a quick glimpse at Scarlet, the main character of the title and a brief view of her powers, he it appeared as though we'd all have to wait for E3 to get another peek at the game. At E3 2009 today, I managed to check out Venetica, but once again got only a brief glimpse at Scarlet's adventure, along with a brief amount of info on the game.

Venetica takes place in an alternate 16th century. Scarlet is the daughter of Death, though she isn't initially aware of her connection with the Grim Reaper. However, Death doesn't have a chance to alert her of her connection, because his powers and his strength have been sapped by a cult of necromancers that are trying to use his power to conquer the world. As Death's daughter, Scarlet has his same abilities, although they haven't been awakened yet. But what Scarlet does discover is that she's being hunted by the same necromancers, and she'll have to learn how to train and use her powers to defeat this threat.

While I didn't see any of these abilities in use, I was able to find out additional info about Scarlet's powers, such as the fact that she'll be able to move between the world of the living and the dead to attack enemies, allowing her to sneak up on people, escape incoming blows or even resurrect herself if she takes enough damage. Scarlet will also have the option to climb onto and traverse the roofs of Venice, as well as enter every building in the city and swim its canals. Finally, Scarlet will have three separate guilds that she'll have to interact with: pirates, traders and postmen, which should provide her with missions or other tasks to complete. While it was still a quick glimpse, it'll be interesting to check out Venetica when it's released later this year.

Mass Effect 2

Mass Effect 2

Genre: RPG

Publisher: Electronic Arts
Developer: BioWare
Release Date: January 26, 2010
Also on: X360
ESRB: M

Once again stepping into the role of the heroic Commander Shepard, gamers command their crew on a suicide mission in space. Players must assemble their squad from amongst the galaxy's most powerful mystics, geniuses, and convicts and lead them on a suicide mission to discover why humans are vanishing from the galaxy. The success of the mission hinges on the squad recruited and their loyalty to the mission. Shepard's future depends on it.

REVIEW (TAKEN FROM IGN):

Mass Effect is one of my favorite games of the past decade. Despite its technical shortcomings, BioWare's first in what it promised to be a trilogy took the role-playing genre to new cinematic heights. Mass Effect 2 is a better game in near every way. From the very first scene, you will be hooked. And the farther you dive into this epic action role-playing game, the better it gets. It fulfills the promise of its predecessor while continuing to push the boundaries of what we should expect in a videogame.

This is the continued saga of Commander Shepard. It's the future, and all sentient life across the galaxy is in peril. An advanced race of machines known as Reapers is intent on wiping the slate clean. Shepard, a distinguished soldier, has faced this threat and emerged triumphant once, but victory is far from assured. Now Shepard must take the fight to the enemy -- a mission that is dubbed suicidal from the outset. Things don't look very promising, but Shepard has a plan. It involves recruiting the best and brightest from around the galaxy and somehow convincing them their lives are worth sacrificing for the greater good. These heroes are what drive the story. Their motivations become yours as the experience continues to get better with each addition to the cast. Shepard's compatriots are fascinating and flawed; captivating and occasionally despicable. The arc of the main tale itself isn't in itself exceptional, but the characters BioWare has crafted most definitely are. These are some of the most compelling players I've ever seen in a videogame -- the Drell named Thane is a particular favorite of mine -- and the great design and writing isn't limited to the main cast. The citizens of the galaxy are extraordinary and offer more than enough reason to explore every location and talk to everybody.

All of this is made even better by Mass Effect's trademark cinematic and interactive approach to conversations. With Mass Effect 1, BioWare introduced a conversation wheel that allowed for fast-moving, intriguing, and player driven cutscenes. Rather than slowly moving through conversations by selecting dialogue from a list, Mass Effect allows the player to quickly choose an emotional response, which generally include an honorable paragon reaction and a snappy renegade remark. The result is that every little dialogue snippet is about as engaging as they come. It was innovative when Mass Effect 1 first came out, and it's still so far ahead of the curve, backed up by further refinements, including a quick-time interrupt system, and powerful voice acting. Mordin Solus, a Salarian scientist played by Michael Beattie, and Martin Sheen as the Illusive Man, are high points in an all-star cast of voices. The true strength of Mass Effect 2's story, however, is in how personal BioWare has made it. If you played Mass Effect 1 through to the end and still have your save data, this game will import your character and all the decisions you made. The central plot will not drastically change, but the experience most certainly will. Some old friends and acquaintances will return – and others won't – based on decisions you made in the last game. Even the opening moments of Mass Effect 2 can be slightly different.

The actions you take in the sequel only compound this feeling of personalization. By the finale you'll have made so many decisions – ranging from simple things like whether you play as a male or female all the way up to those governing life or death – that the result is a game that is yours and yours alone. Choices you made in Mass Effect 1 come back to remind you of past good deeds or injustices. Decisions made here affect the final outcome. Reminders that everything you do will be reflected in Mass Effect 3 are everywhere, adding further drama to every conversation. Things you say and do actually matter, and that's an incredible sensation to get from a videogame. Even if you didn't play Mass Effect 1, this game is worth playing. If you're not importing a character, BioWare simply makes some of the decisions from Mass Effect 1 for you. It's slightly less dramatic and the story here is often references events in the first game, which might make some bits less thrilling for novices. There are revelations and tantalizing plot twists that Mass Effect veterans will go crazy for. These same moments simply won't carry the same weight with those hopping in for part two. It's a bit of a Catch-22 for the designers tasked with the impossible job of pleasing newcomers while still pushing the limits.

Speaking of pleasing people, BioWare listened to every last bit of criticism leveled at Mass Effect 1. That game, particularly on Xbox 360, suffered from a few technical and presentational issues. This sequel is a much, much cleaner experience. Long elevator rides and slow-loading textures are gone, replaced with (occasionally lengthy) loading screens. Generic cut-and-paste side quests and empty planets to explore have been totally ripped out. Pretty much everything that anybody took even the slightest issue with in Mass Effect 1 has been axed or rebuilt entirely. Even though it's a cleaner production, Mass Effect 2 isn't a perfectly polished game. I've played through the game twice and during that time experienced sound cutting out, my character getting stuck in the environment and full game crashes. Thankfully, these miscues are infrequent, which allows the art style to shine. Mass Effect 2 is a visual treat, filled with breathtaking landscapes and an awesome attention to detail. If you're playing on PC and have a powerful rig (I took Shepard for a spin on an Alienware Intel Core 2 Quad 2.00 GHz prcoessor, dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M cards, and 6 GB of memory), it will look even better.

The improvements aren't only technical. The inventory and skill systems have been made more manageable, streamlined to the point that they might initially appear too thin for a role-playing game. Keep playing, however, and you'll begin to see strength and depth emerge as you further customize your squad. One of the biggest reasons why this streamlined approach to character customization works is the retooled character classes. The same six specialization options are back, ranging from the Jedi-inspired biotic users to the technically inclined engineer. This time, however, they've been defined and differentiated much more clearly, each getting its own set of weapon specializations and unique skills. Playing as a soldier is a vastly different combat experience compared to the vanguard or infiltrator. Each class has its own approach to battle, which is then further defined by how you choose to outfit your squad and where you assign skill points. By the end of the game, everything about Mass Effect 2 will be shaped by your choices – from the story to the ebb and flow of combat. Of course, none of this would matter if it isn't fun to play. Good news. Mass Effect 2 is a lot of fun. The action has been refined to the point that even general fans of shooters will find a lot to like here. It's not perfect, but the game handles quite well. It doesn't take long to master simultaneously ripping off rounds from an assault rifle, tossing out a few biotic skills, and directing the two AI driven squad mates to combine raw power with smart tactics. And when things get really rough -- and they will, Mass Effect 2 is no cake walk -- you can always pull out a heavy weapon and tear the enemy a new one. Add in fantastic level design and awesome skills like the vanguard's charge or the infiltrator's cloaking ability and you have one spectacular virtual playground. Mass Effect 1 toed the line by offering some of the action elements that shooter fans enjoy with some of the role-playing tactics that the hardcore fans of the genre want. The sequel improves both areas for a through-and-through satisfying battle system.

On PC, the heads-up display is a bit different, custom built to work with a keyboard and mouse. Both versions are largely identical, though you will get a few more options for customizing hot keys and skill usage on the PC. Which works better for you will be a matter of personal preference.

An emphasis has clearly been put on ensuring that the combat in Mass Effect 2 never grows stale. Side quests each have their own unique areas to explore -- and you'll have to explore the galactic map, talk to random characters, and find key items to even trigger many of them. The combat zones themselves, however, have been cleaned up to be more straightforward and compelling, rather than repetitive labyrinths. New gameplay twists are introduced frequently with some large quests eschewing combat entirely. There's a great focus on exploration and discovery here and BioWare has made sure that the reward for doing so is worth the effort. Games like Mass Effect 2 don't come around often enough. Look at any aspect and you can be sure it's great. It's incredibly personal while still retaining a sense of epic sweeping scale. The combat and mission design are outstanding. The visuals, voice acting, soundtrack, and direction are miles ahead of the competition. Perhaps most impressively, Mass Effect 2 manages to fulfill its incredible ambition while only suffering from very few technical hiccups. The only real caveat I should mention is that some of the revelations and plot twists won't be quite as powerful if you haven't played Mass Effect 1, but that isn't any reason to skip this fantastic videogame.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (PC)

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (PC)

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Voldemort is tightening his grip
on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the
safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that dangers may even lie within
the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final
battle that he knows is fast approaching. Together they work to find the
key to unlock Voldemort's defenses and, to this end, Dumbledore recruits
his old friend and colleague, the well-connected and unsuspecting bon
vivant Professor Horace Slughorn, whom he believes holds
crucial information. Meanwhile, the students are under attack from a
very different adversary as teenage hormones rage across the
ramparts. Harry finds himself more and more drawn to Ginny,
but so is Dean Thomas. And Lavender Brown has decided that
Ron is the one for her, only she hadn't counted on Romilda Vane?s
chocolates! And then there's Hermione, simmering with jealously but
determined not to show her feelings. As romance blossoms, one
student remains aloof. He is determined to make his mark, albeit a dark
one. Love is in the air, but tragedy lies ahead and Hogwarts may never
be the same again.

In the game, players will return to Hogwarts to help Harry survive a
fraught sixth year. They will also have a chance to engage in exciting
wizard duels, mix and brew magical ingredients in Potions class and
take to the air to lead the Gryffindor Quidditch team to victory.
Players may
even get sidetracked by Ron's romantic entanglements as they journey
towards a dramatic climax and discover the identity of the Half-Blood Prince.
